Battle of the Pyramids 21st July 1798 by Louis Lejeune. Napoleon with an army of 36,000 seized Malta on the 10th of June 1798 form the Knights of St John then sailed on to land west of Alexandria on July 1st. They seized Alexandria form the Mameluke ruler Ibrahim who fled into Syria. But the Mameluke military Commander Murad Bey was determined to stop Napoleon entering Cairo, so blocked the French advance at Embabeh on the left bank of the Nile near the pyramids. Under his command he had 40,000 troops but only 6,000 of these were the fierce fighting force of Mamelukes. On July 21st napoleon moved onto the Egyptian positions and Murad launched an all out attack with his cavalry. But the 6,000 Mamelukes were no match for the French infantry and artillery which fired volley after volley, devastating the Mamelukes. When the charge had failed the disorganized Egyptian infantry fled. With only 300 casualties, Napoleon marched into Cairo. Special Brigade 50 by David Pentland. Gabes, Tunisia, 21st November 1942. Following the capture of Thelepte and its airfield by US paratroops, Axis forces responded by sending German paratroops to Gafsa, and a scratch force of Italians to occupy Gabes. Battle of Bosworth by Brian Palmer. In 1485, the Lancastrian contender for the throne of England, Henry Tudor, sailed from France with a small force of mainly continental mercenaries determined to wrestle the crown from Richard III. Gathering many supporters along the way he eventually arrived at Bosworth with an army numbering 5000 against Richards 8000. Things began well enough for Richard but it became apparent during the battle that the neutral Stanley Brothers, Sir William Stanley and Lord Thomas Stanley and their men who had remained on the sidelines, had elected to fight for Henry. Richard charged for Henry in person but was overwhelmed and killed. He was the last English King to die in battle. Although not the final battle of the War of the Roses, the victory for Henry at Bosworth secured the crown and began the Tudor dynasty. SS Panzer Grenadiers by Chris Collingwood. The term Panzergrenadier was applied equally to both the infantry section of the German Panzer Divisons and was also used for the new Panzergrenadier Divisions. The German army Panzergrenadier Divisions initially came from existing infantry divisions but were the first Divisons to be motorised. These included the 3rd, 10th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 25th, and 29th divisions. During the war special elite regiments such as the Grosdeutchland Division were created. The Waffen SS also produced a number of panzergrenadier regiments. Many army and Waffen SS regiments were upgraded to Panzer divisions during the later stages of the war. When jumping into Europe on D-Day, Paul lost most of his equipment, including his rifle, and his parachute snagged on trees from which he had to cut himself loose; he later found out he had landed eight miles from the intended drop zone. When jumping into Europe on D-Day he was 2nd Squad Leader but having scattered on the jump, it was not until several days later that he joined up with the rest of the company, just prior to the attack on Carentan during which he was made 3rd Platoon Sergeant. After final combat training in Holland, Herb was trucked into Bastogne in December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge, also fighting in Foy. On 9th January 1945 Herb was wounded by artillery fire and his legs were severely injured but ultimately saved. Red Steel at Kamenewo, Mtsensk, Central Front, Russia, 6th October 1941 by David Pentland. Following the capture of Orel, the German High Command ordered General Heinz Guderians panzers to push on towards Mtsensk, Tuila and Moscow. Alarmed at the situation Stalin deployed Major General Leyushenko to halt this advance. the battle was finally joined when when the 4th Panzer Division crossed the Lisiza stream at Kamenewo, pushing back the dug in defenders towards Mtsensk, but unaware they had entered a Soviet trap. at this point the T34s and KV1s of Colonel Katukovs 4th tank Brigade attacked from the woods on the Panzers left flank smashing the out gunned and weaker armoured PzIII tanks and half tracks. For the Germans the battle was a terrible shock, stalling their advance and an unexpected demonstration of Soviet armoured superiority. Richard the Lionheart by Brian Palmer. Richard the Lionhearts tactical skills and military training played a substantial role in the capture of Acre in 1191 by the Crusaders. But Richard the Lionheart was ruthless and after the capture of the city he marched 2,700 Muslim soldiers onto the road of Nazareth and in front of the Muslim army positions, had them executed one by one. But Richard the Lionheart was up against a great leader in Saladin and the crusades did not always go his way. After he negotiated the Treaty of Jaffa with Saladin and secured the granting of special rights of travel around Palestine and in Jerusalem for Christian pilgrims, Richard the Lionheart started his journey back to England in 1192. He was shipwrecked, and captured by the German Emperor Henry VI, only being released after a 150,000 mark ransom was paid. This money was raised by taxes in England.
