| Ed Tipper volunteered for the paratroopers and was assigned to Easy Company, 101st Airborne. He made his first jump into Normandy on D-Day. Fighting in Carentan, he was hit by a mortar shell and badly injured. His right eye was damaged, and later removed completely, while both his legs were broken.
