Military Art Collecton - William Lunn MM

William Lunn was born in Middlesborough on 15th December 1896. He joined the Green Howards as a regular soldier and took part in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Amongst his duties was that of providing water for the whole battalion. He was in constant action and was decorated with the Military Medal. He returned to France with his regiment after the evacuation from Gallipoli and was again in action during the battle of the Somme. On 31st October 1916, whilst at a weapon training school in Belgium, he was accidentally shot in the left leg which had to be amputated. He had a difficult period in hospital in England and was then discharged from the Army. After attending a Government Rehabilitation course he became a laboratory assistant at a college in London where he worked until retirement. Our sources show us that he was alive in 1997 at the age of 100, but we have no further information.
