Rear Admiral Arthur Rodney Barry Sturdee was born on 6th December 1919, was educated at Canford School and entered the Royal Navy as Special Entry Cadet 1937. He served throughout the Second World War and was a Midshipman aboard HMS Exeter at the Battle of the River Plate. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1941,specialised in Navigation in 1944, minesweeping in the Mediterranean 1944-45. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1945. Further positions : Lieutenant Commander 1949, RN Staff College 1950-51, Staff of Navigation School 1951-52, Commander 1952, Joint Services Staff College 1953, British Joint Services Mission, Washington, 1953-55, Fleet Navigating Officer, Mediterranean 1955-57, Executive Officer, RNAS Culdrose 1958-59, Captain 1960, NATO Defence College 1960-63, Queen's Harbour Master, Singapore (as Commodore) 1967-69, Rear Admiral 1969, Flag Officer Gibraltar 1969-72. Retired 1972. ADC to the Queen 1969. He died on 6th October 2009.

Joining the Royal Navy in 1937, he served throughout World War Two. He was a Midshipman aboard HMS Exeter at the battle of the River Plate and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1945. In a long post war career he attained the rank of Rear Admiral before retiring in 1972. He died in 2009.
