Clipped Signature - E A 'Ted' Wass.

Known as Ted, he worked in the supply department of the RAF before volunteering as aircrew. Assigned to No.617 Sqn as a gunner he flew on operations against the German battleship Tirpitz, but in January 1944 baled out over Germany and was captured. He died in April 2009.

He was assigned to the famous No.617 Sqn as a gunner on Lancasters, taking part in two of the three major operations against the German battleship Tirpitz. In January 1944 he was forced to bale out over Germany and spent the remainder of the war in captivity. He died in April 2009.

The Shining Sword by Simon Smith. 		Covered in snow, an Avro Lancaster bomber is parked as a winter's dawn approaches at its squadron's airfield. A fitting tribute to the Avro Lancaster bomber of Bomber Command and all the crews that flew in this stalwart of the Royal Air Force bombing squadrons.

Unexpected Snow by Keith Woodcock.		 Oberleutenant Schalls ME 262 of JG7 catches the Australian crewed Lancaster from 5 group dead astern as it lines up for its bombing run on the Hamburg U-Boat pens. Even at this angle the speed of the jet made it difficult to get off more than a few bursts of cannon fire before it passed through the British formation. The episode was witnessed by navigator Cecil Keys in the leading Lancaster QR/Y from 61 squadron on his last raid of the war. Lt. Schall, an ace with 117 kills, and 2nd highest jet ace of the war with 14 victories was killed the following day when his aircraft hit a bomb crater on landing at his base of Parchim.

Jet Attack by David Pentland. 		The attack by Leutnant Walter Briegleb and his crew on Lancaster Mk.III ND960 DX-I of No.57 Sqn early on 22nd May 1944. Flying Me110 with codes D5+BV with his crew of Feldwebel Walter Bräunlich and Bordfunker Feldwebel Brandt, Briegleb flew undetected beneath the bomber and used the deadly 'Schräge Musik' - upward firing cannon - to hit the fuel tanks in the port wing between the fuselage and inner engine. Pulling away, he watched the aircraft burn and could see both gunners in their turrets but no return fire came. He wondered why none of the crew escaped by parachute with the bomber doomed - it disintegrated in the air over the coast of the island of Fyn, Denmark, impacting near Emtekær at 00:44hrs.<br><br><center>All of the crew were killed :<br>Flight Lieutenant Arthur Richards (Pilot)<br>Flying Officer William Woodall (Navigator)<br>Pilot Officer Athur Bugden (Flight Engineer)<br>Sergeant Thomas Edwards (Wireless Operator)<br>Flying Officer George Ferguson (Air Bomber)<br>Sergeant Harold Griffiths (Air Gunner)<br>Sergeant Cyril Woodmass (Air Gunner)
