Commanded No.274 Sqn in Malta in 1941 flying the Gladiator and Hurricane. He was shot down and repatriated to recover, later commanding No.125 Wing on the Typhoon scoring a total of 11 victories in the war. He died in 1995.

Sir John Lapsley joined the Royal Air Force in 1935 and in 1937 was posted to No.32 Sqn. He flew the Gladiator and Hurricane in command of No.274 Sqn in Malta in 1941, but was shot down over Tobruk on 19th April 1941 and injured. After recovery in England he became an instructor before taking command in 1943 of No.125 Wing flying the Typhoon. He had scored 11 victories in the war. A Gloster Gladiator MkII of 247 Sqn is depicted patrolling off the Cornish coast in August 1940 during which time this squadron became the only one to operate the Gladiator in the defence of the South of England during the Battle of Britain.

Lone Gladiator by Ivan Berryman. 		At the very height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940, there was a great deal of furious fighting above and around the Isle of Wight. Monday 12th was an especially busy day for RAF Fighter Command, not least the Hurricanes of 601 Sqn, one of whom claimed this Messerschmitt Bf.110 in the skies above Bembridge, the two crew <i>Staffel Kapitan Hptmn. Kulbel</i> and his observer <i>Offz. Budig</i> losing their lives as their aircraft plunged into the sea.

Below them a Hurricane of 253 Squadron, sharing the same base, is being prepared for its next vital mission at a distant dispersal. All through the long summer of 1940, as Britain stood alone, a small band of fighter pilots took part in the greatest aerial battle in history. Day after day the men of Fighter Command valiantly took to the air to defend their country from the Luftwaffe and the threat of German invasion and Nazi tyranny. Outnumbered, but never out-fought, they fought to the point of exhaustion and, in doing so, paid a heavy price. But they won.
