Joined the Royal Air Force in 1927 as an engineer. Commissioned as a Pilot Officer, he eventually led No.910 Wing flying P-47 Thunderbolts in Burma and the Far East. After the war he was a senior member of NATO, retiring to civilian life in 1966. He died in 1999.

Flying P-47 Thunderbolts with the 56th Fighter Group in England, Bud Mahurin scored more than 20 victories during World War Two. Seen here in his personal aircraft 42-8487 UN-M named <i>The Spirit of Atlantic City</i> owing to it being paid for by bonds from that city, he shot down three Me109s in a day and three Fw190s another day, before eventually being brought down by return fire from a German bomber. Evacuated from France with the help of the Resistance, he then flew P-51 Mustangs against the Japanese in the Philippines, scoring one more victory before again being shot down, bailing into the ocean. He went on to score more victories in the Korean War before being shot down and taken prisoner for more than a year. He was the only pilot of the US Air Force to down enemy aircraft in the European Theater, Pacific Theater and Korean War. He died in 2010.

Tribute to Walker 'Bud' Mahurin by Ivan Berryman. 		In Europe the tide of war was changing. The Allied invasion of Normandy had thrown the Germans back and the push to Berlin had begun, but in the Far East another invasion had taken place - this time by the Japanese. The fighter pilots of the RAF had become masters of the sky over Burma and after weeks of bitter fighting, air superiority was complete. The Japanese invasion had run out of steam and slowly, but inexorably, the Allies drove them back, fighting through the rains and floods in arduous conditions, strafing supply dumps and airfields, and divebombing enemy concentrations in unequalled precision strikes. One such strike was the operation to secure the Japanese-held Mingaladon Aerodrome near Rangoon on 20 October 1944, when a composite air force, made up of P-47 Thunderbolts from 261 and 146 Squadrons, carried out a low level attack on the vital Japanese stronghold. Richard Taylor's fabulous new painting, <i>Thunder in the East</i>, expertly captures all the fury of this bitter engagement. After completing his bombing attack Warrant Officer Thomas 'Lucky' Carter flying his distinctive P-47 'Pistol Packin' Mamma', engages Nakajima Ki-43 Oscars and Ki-44 Tojo's along with other Thunderbolts of the unit. In commemoration of the men who flew and fought in Burma, joining artist Richard Taylor in signing the whole edition are three RAF veterans that fought in the campaign, two that flew Thunderbolts in Burma and one of the vital ground crew that prepared the P-47s for this actual mission. A fitting tribute to all those that fought in the 'Forgotten War'.

Devastating Thunder by Brian Bateman. 		Flying his Messerschmitt Me109G6, Major Gunther Rall, Group Commander of II./JG11 with over 200 air victories already to his credit, clashes with a P-47 Thunderbolt of the 63rd Sqn, 56th Fighter Group high over the Rhine south of Koblenz, May 12, 1944. Led by Colonel Hub Zemke, the 56th Fighter Group played advance guard to a deep penetration bomber raid to central Germany. As his forty eight P-47 Thunderbolts arrived to sweep the sky around the Koblenz - Frankfurt area, the Me109s of II./JG11 pounced from a 5000 feet height advantage. Simon Atacks high-impact painting shows Major Gunther Rall bringing down Hub Zemkes wingman, the first of two victories he claimed before himself being brought down by 56th Fighter Group P-47s later in the combat. Gunther Rall returned to combat flying, commanding JG300 until the end of hostilities by which time, with 275 air victories, he became the third highest scoring Ace in history.

He flew in India and Burma during World War Two in support of the largest Army under General Sir Bill Slim and Lord Louis Mountbatten, commanding a Wng of P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft moving down from the frontier of India to Rangoon and assisting in the recapture of Mandalay, Rangoon and all Burma. He was on Mountbatten's Staff for the re-invasion of Malaya and was in Singapore for the final surrender. After the war he was a senior member of NATO in Europe under General Eisenhower. He retired in 1966. He died on 27th December 1999.
