Clipped Signature - Michael Haworth.

Joining the Royal Navy in 1927, he served on HMS Valiant, HMS Warspite, HMS Hawkins, HMS Sardonyx and HMS Danae before World War Two. Qualifying as a naval aviator, he then served on HMS Glorious as an Observer in Swordfish aircraft. In the Battle of Britain, his No.826 Naval Air Squadron was under RAF control and in 1941 he joined HMS Formidable in the Western Mediterranean. He was on HMS Furious in 1942 for the relief of Malta. Post war he had senior positions including command of HMS Aisne and HMS Diamond, retiring in 1965. He died in 1999.

Captain Haworth entered the Royal Navy College, Dartmouth in 1927 and graduated as a Midshipman in 1931. His first ship was HMS Valiant which became involved in the Invergordon Mutiny in 1931. Thereafter he served aboard HMS Warspite 1932-33, HMS Hawkins 1933-34. In 1934 he took the Sub-Lieutenant's Courses and was posted to HMS Sardonyx 1935-36 amd HMS Danae which served as a guardship in Shanghai during the Japanese invasion.

Swordfish Over the QE2 by Chris Woods.		 A swordfish from HMS Warspite on patrol off the coast of Egypt, near the port of Alexandria.

Out of Alex by David Pentland. 		Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft.

Attack on the Scharnhorst by Ivan Berryman.		 19th July 1918 - the Tondern raid, the first raid in history carried out from an aircraft carrier. Captain Dickson is shown in his Sopwith Camel 2F.1 departing HMS Furious just after 3am, and along with 5 other aircraft would successfully attack the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern in Denmark. They destroyed two airships in their hangar, and the entire base was subsequently abandoned. 7 aircraft began the raid : one turned back with engine trouble, three landed in Denmark afterwards while another failed to return to the British fleet. Only Dickson and Captain B Smart ditched in the sea near the British ships and were recovered. For this raid, Dickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later moved to HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth then flew on HMS Argus and was a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In World War Two he helped to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained in the RAF post war, retiring in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. He died in 1987.

In 1938 he took the Air Observer's Course and after gaining his wings was posted to the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious in 1939. In 1940 he joined No.826 Naval Air Squadron which was disembarked under RAF operational control for the bombing of invasion posts and shipping during the Battle of Britain. In 1941 he joined HMS Formidable in the Western Mediterranean and took part in the Battle of Cape Matapan and many other operations against the Italians and Germans, including the evacuation of Crete. Then his squadron was disembarked to fly under RAF operational control in the Western Desert on night bombing support for the 8th Army. During 1942 he served aboard HMS Furious and took part in Operation Pedestal for the relief of Malta. Later in the year he was involved in the planning for Operation Torch - the invasion of North Africa - and Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily.

For the remainder of 1942 and throughout 1943 he served on the planning Staff of SACSEA in the Far East Station. He was then posted to HMS Triumph for the rest of the war.

Post-war he had several senior positions, including command of HMS Aisne and HMS Diamond, retiring in 1965. He died on 9th May 1999.
