A private in the Highland Light Infantry in World War One, he moved to the Royal Flying Corps and commanded No.55 Sqn in 1917, then commaned No.12 Sqn RAF after the war. Holding this position until May 1926, he took up senior roles in the RAF and Air Ministry, retiring in 1949. He died in 1980.

Vulcan Refuel by Ivan Berryman.		 Flying with the RAF in the 1920s he flew aircraft including the Avro 504 and Fairey Fox before joining No.12 Sqn and No.18 Sqn flying the Hart and flying the Wapiti with No.39 Sqn and No.60 Sqn. Trained as an engineer, he spent the entirety of World War Two in the Far East. Post war he served in the Air Ministry.
