 Joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1941, joining No.108 Sqn flying the Wellington in 1942.  He completed a tour in the Western Desert then flew a second tour on Lancasters with No.49 Sqn, ending the war having flown 47 operations.  He later flew Dakotas and Liberators with RAF Transport Command.

 In the predawn light the last Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger II (Kingtigers) of 2nd Company 506th Heavy Tank Battalion, drive south across the Arnhem bridge to prepare for the upcoming counter-attack to retake Elst and the Nymegen road bridge.

Finale at Arnhem, Holland, 24th September 1944 by David Pentland.
 Serving with the 506th Parachute Regiment attached to the 101st Airborne, Bill took part in the initial parachute drop on D-Day. He made a second drop on Operation Market Garden, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and finally took part in the capture of Hitler's Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden on 4th-5th May 1945.  He died in 2017.

 A Douglas C-47 of the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group gets away from the Devon airfield of Upottery on 5th June 1944  carrying paratroops of 101st Airborne Division.  The company departed from Upottery airbase in Devon, England, and dropped over the Cotentin Peninsula of Normandy, France in the early hours of the morning of June 6th, 1944 at the start of the Normandy invasion.
