Trapped within a rapidly decreasing perimeter, the exhausted BEF along with elements of the French 1st Army appeared to be at the mercy of the mighty Luftwaffe. No one though had reckoned on the brilliant leadership of Admiral Ramsay nor the gallant and unstinting efforts of the military and civilians who managed to rescue over 330,000 troops in nine days.

British Cruiser Mark IA CS (A9) tanks and Bren Carriers of A squadron, 3RTR, 1st Armoured Division, line the road south of Calais, prior to being sent south to secure the bridges on the St. Omer canal. The British column of tanks failed to reach its objective, encountering the advance guard of 1st Panzer Division near the little village of Hames-Boucres, and after an inconclusive afternoon battle fell back towards Calais in the early evening.

Leaving with her are the trawlers, which were part of the small boat armada which played such a major part in the evacuation of Dunkirk.
