Waterloo - 18th June 1815. The Red Lancers made five separate attempts on the allied squares and batteries suffering heavy casualties but failing to break either. Mercer's artillery troop would not retire and served their guns continuously regardless of repeated attack.

This history of what the author proudly calls a famous troop of the Royal Horse Artillery begins with the batterys formation by Captain (later Maj.Gen.) Sir George Fisher in 1801 in time for the Napoleonic Wars. In these the Troop took a distinguished role at the Battle of Waterloo - the charge of G Troop being the subject of a painting which forms the frontispiece of this book. The unit next saw service during the Indian Mutiny in which it took part in the campaign in Oude province. After helping disperse a somewhat farcical Fenian revolt in ireland in 1867, G Troop took part in the Boer War, being present at the Battle of Magersfontein, the relief of Kimberley and the wars final campaign. This fine unit history is illustrated by plate portraits, maps of the Waterloo and South African campaigns, and is accompanied by an appendix listing the units officers.

With pressure mounting on the French right flank, Napoleon, in a final desperate attempt to shatter the Allied line to his front, set in motion the famed Imperial Guard. wellington, aware of the danger, ordered General Baron de Chasse to launch his 3rd Division of Dutch/Belgian infantry into the advancing Grenadiers. After a desperate firefight the Netherlands Division sent the Frenchmen reeling back down the slope and succeeded in holding their part of the line.

The Dutch / Belgian Infantry at the Battle of Waterloo - 1815 by Brian Palmer.		 The final attack of the farm of La Haye Sainte by the 13th Legere Regiment, personally commanded by Marshal Ney. The farmhouse was defended by the 2nd Light Battalion of the King's German Legion under Baring, who were forced to retreat after expending all of their ammunition.

Of all Napoleons Generals at Waterloo none distinguished himself more than Marshal Ney, Prince of the Moskowa, the splendid warrior upon whom his Imperial master had conferred the proud title of Le Brave des Braves (The Bravest of the Brave) Twice he led the attack on the British centre, first at the head of the cavalry and then with the Old Guard, and he only retired from the field at nightfall, after five horses had been killed under him.
