Lightning F6s of 5 squadron taking off from Binbrook in the 1970s. This squadron first flew the Lightning (an earlier mark) in October 1965. It was the first truly supersonic fighter to see service with the RAF and was the mainstay of Britains air defence during the cold war, finally replaced by the Tornado F3 in 1988.

William Pitt-Brown was a ground-attack Typhoon pilot during the Normandy campaign. Prior to this he served on the North-West Frontier flying Wapati and Valencia aircraft with No.31 Sqn, before flying Curtiss Mohawks with No.5 Sqn on the Arakan and Imphal fronts in the Burma campaign. During the Normandy campaign, he commanded No.174 Sqn the led 121 Wing, completing more than 100 missions. Shown here in Curtiss Mohawk IV of No.5 Sqn, Arakan, William Pitt-Brown went on to high command of the Royal Air Force.

Tribute to William Pitt-Brown by Ivan Berryman. 		A pair of 29 Squadron Lightning F.Mk3s tuck their gear up and head skyward from the Wattisham tarmac in the summer of 1972.

QRA Scramble by Ivan Berryman. 		Served with No.17 Sqn RFC in Egypt and Soudan, earning the Military Cross. He then flew RE8s on the Western Front with No.5 Sqn. In World War Two he was a senior officer credited with several important strategies which influenced the war. He later became Chief of Air Staff, retiring in 1953. He died in 1979. <br><br><b>Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures.</b><br>

Clipped Signature - Sir John Slessor.		 No.5 Sqn and No.11 Sqn Lightnings intercept a Tu-95 Bear, supported by an essential Victor tanker. QRA, day and night, 24hrs a day, 7 days a week 52 weeks a year, 365 days a year - never a day off, always ready! Over and over again for so many years, the air defences of Britain were regularly tested by Russian Tu-95 Bears as they probed NATO airspace high above the North Sea.
