I accompanied the QRH for this routine patrol north of PB Attal. We surprised a few locals by our presence and they were definitely hostile towards us - we fingerprinted and took biometrics of a couple of the 'shady' looking ones - all were subsequently proved clear.

Recovering a vehicle in Helmand. A support dumper truck has edged over to the side of the track which has given way under the weight. Two REME soldiers are pulling out the tow-rope (which is made of metal cables) and will attach this to the stranded vehicle. every vehicle will have a top-gunner, heavily armed with an array of weapons - usually the GPMG. When the convoy is stationary for any period of time they are at their most vulnerable to attack, so speed is of the essence to get the convoy on its way again.

REME Recovery by Graeme Lothian. 		Reformed in November 2000, 99 Squadron, based at Brize Norton, is now the operator of the RAF's new heavy transport, the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, an example of which is shown on the newly extended concrete runway at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The C-17s have become the mainstay of the RAF's supply train, shuttling between the UK and Afghanistan, as well as providing specialist aeromedical evacuation and humanitarian relief duties.

Globemaster III by Ivan Berryman. 		Delivers infrastructure engineering support, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering consultancy. This painting shows the team taking soil samples with a view to building a bridge across a wadi. On the far side of the bank soldiers can be seen in consultation with the elders from the local village. Force protection gives cover while all this is going on.

67 Works Group Royal Engineers by Graeme Lothian. 		The Royal Air Force is currently the largest operator of the Boeing Chinook after the United States, this ubiquitous helicopter now equipping No.s 7, 18 and 27 Sqn based at RAF Odiham. Deployed in Afghanistan, the flight and ground crew operate jointly as the Expeditionary Chinook Engineering Squadron (ExCES), No.1310 Flight. Here, a Chinook is depicted ferrying an underslung re-supply load out of Camp Bastion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
