A Friend in Need by Ivan Berryman.

146 Wing Hawker Typhoons were busy throughout the winter of 1944 / 45, carrying out a wide variety of missions and operations using a combination of rockets and bombs. Here, Wing Commander J R Baldwin OC of 146 Wing escorts a damaged wingman home as they enter the holding pattern to begin finals into their base at Antwerp. Baldwin's aircraft is Mk 1B PD521, carrying his personal markings JBII on the nose.

609 Sqn Hawker Typhoons are shown taking off from Manson in Kent in February 1943. Nearest aircraft, R7872 (PR-S) is that of Sgt John <i>Johnny</i> Wiseman, the other, DN294 (PR-O) being the mount of Fl Sgt Alan <i>Babe</i> Haddon. Both aircraft were tragically lost during an action on 14th February, the pair being taken by surprise by Focke-Wulf 190s over the Channel, Wiseman losing his life in the incident.

Red Section Scramble by Ivan Berryman. 		Harry Pears joined No.175 Sqn flying Typhoons, completing over 80 sorties and claiming a victory over an enemy aircraft. He stayed with the RAF after the war, flying the Tempest, Canberra and Sabre among others, before retiring in 1965. He died in 2016. <br><br><i>Clipped alongside the signature of Kenneth Kneen - Kenneth Kneen flew Typhoons with No.175 Squadron attacking ground targets in the Dutch - German border region. He joined the RAFVR after the war. </i>

Clipped Signature - Harry Pears.		Joining the RAF in 1936, he flew Hurricanes in the Battle of France. Awarded the DFC, he commanded No.128 Sqn and No.112 Sqn in Africa, gaining a Bar to the DFC and a DSO. He later flew in Malta and flew Typhoons in the summer of 1944. Credited with more than 24 aircraft destroyed in the war, he retired from the RAF in 1963. He died in 2011.

Clipped Signature - Billy Drake.		 The leadership qualities and grim determination of Squadron Leader J R Baldwin was seldom better demonstrated that when he led a small flight of Hawker Typhoons against a force of some thirty Focke-Wulf Fw.190s in January 1944. Nine of the German aircraft were shot down that day, Baldwin himself being responsible for two of them. He is shown here in Typhoon PR-A of No.609 Squadron.
