Tribute to Heinz Lange by Ivan Berryman.

Flying with JG21 at the outbreak of World War Two, Heinz Lange claimed his first victory in October 1939. Transferring to JG54, he flew 76 missions throughout the Battle of Britain, then scored 7 victories in the first week of the invasion of Russia. He commanded 1./JG54 from October 1941, then 3./JG51 from 1942 to 1944 before returning to JG54, then led IV./JG51. He is shown here in Bf109 F-2 of 1./JG.54 at Krasnagvardeisk, Russia, 1941. Awarded the Knight's Cross, he scored 70 victories in over 600 missions. He died in 2006.

HM Stephen - one of the Battle of Britains top scoring fighter pilots, brings down two Me109s in quick succession over the White Cliffs of Dover, early on August 11, 1940. Flying a Spitfire with 74 Squadron, HM shot down five German aircraft on this day, and damaged a further three. The note in his log book starts First flap of the day at 0600 hrs ... <br><br><b>Published 2000.<br><br>Sadly, all of the pilots who signed this edition have since passed away.</b>

First Flap of the Day by Nicolas Trudgian.		 You can feel the tension in this evocative painting as Messerschmitt Bf109s from 7./JG2 Richthofen head out on a long-range fighter patrol in September 1940. With the sun behind them they hope to launch a surprise attack on unsuspecting RAF aircraft, however these enemy raiders will soon be intercepted by some of Fighter Command's most determined 'defenders of the realm'.

Eye of the Sun by Robert Taylor. 		Credited with more than 130 victories in World War Two, Alfred Grislawksi scored 24 of these on the Western Front. He is depicted here flying his Me109 with JG53 in what would be his last combat on 26th September 1944. Having shot down a P-38 Lightning earlier in the day, he was shot down in the combat shown by the P-51 Mustang of American Ace Hub Zemke and bailed out. Opening his parachute very low for fear of being shot at, he landed hard and damaged vertebrae, and did not recover before the end of the war. Awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, he died in 2003 aged 83.

Tribute to Alfred Grislawski by Ivan Berryman. 		No one knows for certain whether the two great fighter aces Douglas Bader and Adolf Galland actually fought each other in a one-on-one combat, but it is thought highly likely that they did as the famous Tangmere Wing led by Bader regularly found itself dueling with the Bf.109s of JG.26 led by Galland. Their great rivalry came to an end in August 1941 when Bader was shot down over St Omer, but these two heroes were to become close friends after the war, each having the utmost respect for the other.
