Tribute to Gunther Seeger by Ivan Berryman.

Scoring his first victory during the Battle of Britain with 3./JG2, Gunther Seeger served on the Channel Front until the end of 1942 before moving to the Mediterranean. Joining JG53 shortly after, he racked up 56 victories in all, and was awarded the Knight's Cross. Shown here in his Bf.109 F2 of Stab JG2 in France, 1941, Gunther Seeger died in 2013.

 Heligoland, German coast, 18th December 1939.  Johannes <i>Macky</i> Steinhoff attacking Vickers Wellington bombers of No.37 Sqn.  A raiding force of 22 RAF Wellington Ia bombers from 9, 37 and 149 squadrons was intercepted by some 60 Me109 and Me110s.  First to engage were 6 Me109Ds from Oberleutnant Johannes <i>Macki</i> Steinhoff 's NG26's experimental night fighter staffel. In the running battle that followed Steinhoff and Feldwebel Szuggar claimed 1 bomber each.  It was a disasterous day for the RAF with a total of 12 aircraft being shot down and another 6 crash landing on their return to England.

 Walter Schuck's 104th Victory, 17th June 1944.  Schuck was posted to 7 Staffel, JG 5 in April 1942, flying on the Arctic Front. He claimed his first victory on 15th May 1942, a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3. On 5th June he shot down four Russian fighters and by April 1943 he had claimed 54 victories against the Soviets. In April 1944 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his score of 84 kills. On 15th June 1944 he claimed his 100th victory on a day when he shot down 6 aircraft, an ace-in-a-day achievement. He was the 78th Luftwaffe pilot to achieve the century mark. Two days later he had his most successful day, claiming 12 victories in 24 hours, a feat never surpassed in JG 5. In August he became commander of 10 Staffel, JG 5.

 In the summer of 1940, JG3, under the command of Hans von Hahn, scramble their Me109s from their French countryside base at Colombert, near Calais. With the deafening sound of their piston-engined aircraft, sporting the groups colourful Dragon emblem on their cowlings, they head for the battle front. <br><br><b>Published 2000.</b>
