Joined No.602 Sqn flying Spitfires against the Luftwaffe at the height of the Battle of Britain. He served throughout the war, also flying Hurricanes in Malta and Wellingtons in the Middle East. He died in 2002.

Flying Officer Christopher John (Micky) Mount joined NO.602 squadron on August 8th 1940 after a brief conversion course on Spitfires. On August 18th his Spitfire L1005 was severely damaged in combat with JU 87s and BF109s over Ford. Micky was unhurt. he again escaped injury when his Spitfire X4270 was damaged landing at Tangmere. he served in many of the theatres of WW2 and he flew Hurricanes in Malta and North Africa and Wellingtons in the Middle east. Hugh Glen Niven was born in Toronto, Canada in 1919.Niven joined 602 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force at Abbotsinch on 7th May 1939 and began his training in Avro Tutors. On the outbrteak of World War Two he was posted to 11 EFTS Perth on 25th October 1939. He went to 15 FTS Lossiemouth on 23rd March 1940 and after completing the course he moved to 5 OTU Aston Down on 17th August to convert to Hurricanes. Niven rejoined 602 Squadron, then at Westhampnett, on 1st September 1940 but, having had no

Wing Commander Hector MacLean (deceased)
Hector was flying with No 602 squadron before war broke out. A gallant young man, his fighter pilot days were drawn to an abrupt halt on August 26th 1940 when his leg was severely injured during battle, but the war was by no means over. After his recovery he was posted to Rosemount for duty as a fighter controller, in the rank of Squadron Leader. Hector retired and lived in Kilmacolm near Glasgow. He died on 19th July 2007.

Rose, Stuart Nigel

Squadron Leader Stuart Nigel Rose (deceased)
Originally from Elswick in the north east of England, Rose moved south to join the RAFVR in March 1939, called up at the outbreak of war he was commissioned in June 1940 joining No.602 Sqn in June 1940 flying Spitfires and serving with the unit throughout the Battle of Britain, claiming three victories. Squadron Leader Nigel Rose was then posted to 54 Sqn at Hornchurch in September 1941 before becoming an instructor in 1942, and also serving in the Middle East. Afterwards he moved to No.54 Sqn

Depicting Spitfire of 609 squadron during the Battle of Britain.

Spitfire Tally-Ho by Geoff Lea. 		No one knows for certain whether the two great fighter aces Douglas Bader and Adolf Galland actually fought each other in a one-on-one combat, but it is thought highly likely that they did as the famous Tangmere Wing led by Bader regularly found itself dueling with the Bf.109s of JG.26 led by Galland. Their great rivalry came to an end in August 1941 when Bader was shot down over St Omer, but these two heroes were to become close friends after the war, each having the utmost respect for the other.

Adversaries by Ivan Berryman. 		A legend of Malta, Allan Scott had already claimed a shared Ju88 with No.124 Sqn by the time he flew his Spitfire to the island from HMS Eagle in July 1942. He soon joined No.1435 Sqn and claimed an Italian bomber. With a campaign of Axis bombing that October, his claims of damaged and probable victories increased and he is credited with at least 5 destroyed during his time on Malta, including the Me109 depicted here with Grand Harbour in the background. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, he went on to fly Spitfires and Mustangs in the build-up to and aftermath of D-Day. He died in 2020.

Tribute to Allan Scott by Ivan Berryman. 		Pete Brothers is shown here in his Hurricane P2921 GZ-L of No.32 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. In one of 8 victories claimed before September 1940, he has peppered a marauding German Dornier Do.215, its port engine now trailing smoke and flame. In this incident, he had been attacked by Me110s and had stalled while turning to meet them. Spinning out of the stall he immediately sighted, engaged and shot down the Do.215. He claimed an Me109 later the same day. Pete Brothers is credited with a total of 16 victories during World War Two. He died aged 91 in December 2008.

After much complaining he rejoined 602 Squadron on 21st September. His Spitfire, X4603, was damaged in combat with Me109s over Maidstone on 29th October. Apart from a few days with 603 Squadron in late July 1941, Niven was serving with 602 until 23rd September 1941. He was admitted to Horton Emergency Hospital on the 24th, suffering from tuberculosis. He was invalided out of the RAF on 12th March 1942 as a Flying Officer. Sadly Niven died on 8th April 2008.
