Buck Casson flew with No.616 Sqn during the Battle of Britain claiming 4 victories. In 1941 he claimed a futher two victories over Me109s but was shot down on 9th August, and taken prisoner for the remainder of the war. He died in 2003.

Born 6th January 1915, Buck Casson completed his pilot training with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force at the outbreak of WW2. He spent the Battle of Britain with 616 Sqn, claiming a Do17, Me 109, and two He 111s, one damaged and one probable. Becoming part of the Tangmere Wing in 1941, the squadron was under the command of Douglas Bader. On 5th May 1941, he shared in a Ju88, but was forced to bale out during the action. He claimed two more Me109s, a further two probables and one damaged before

A telephone rings at a typical flight dispersal: a call from Operations sends pilots and ground crew running for aircraft ready fuelled and armed. A mechanic starts the engine of the spitfire in the foreground and it explodes into life, blasting out blue exhaust gases, the slipstream flattening the grass and kicking up dust. A young sergeant pilot with feelings a mixture of fear and excitement, runs for his machine. The painting captures the tense atmosphere of a much repeated action from these crucial events of over fifty years ago.

Scramble by Gerald Coulson. 		You can almost hear the roar of their mighty Merlin engines and feel the prop-wash in this salute to the Hawker Hurricane. This classic portrayal of this much-loved fighter depicts a pair of Mk.I Hurricanes from No.32 Sqn leading the scramble away from their forward airfield. Often making three, four or five such scrambles a day at the height of the battle, this time they are racing to intercept Luftwaffe intruders who have been spotted crossing the Kent coast.

Response to Call by Robert Taylor. 		An Avro Anson Mk.I from Coastal Command is attacked by an Me109.

Coastal Command - Avro Anson Mk.I by Ivan Berryman. 		Tom Dalton-Morgan was a British flying Ace who was credited with at least 17 victories during World War Two. It was in the aircraft shown here, Hurricane Mk.I P3972 of No.43 Sqn that on 13th August 1940 he claimed a Ju88 but was struck by return fire, baling out of the stricken Hurricane. He became an Ace during the Battle of Britain and later also became a Hurricane night-fighter Ace, claiming six victories. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Service Order and Order of the British Empire, he went on to manage the Woomera rocket testing facility in Australia for 30 years. He died in 2004, aged 87.
