Everett Jones : A pilot of B-24 Liberators, he completed a tour of 21 missions with the 466th Bomb Group. He also later piloted the P-47 Thunderbolt, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Vernon Swain : Flew in B-24 Liberators with the 328th Bomb Group, 93rd Bomb Squadron. Enlisted in 1942, he was part of the Eighth Air Force flying from Norfolk England.

Richard Butler : Joined the 44th Bomb Group and flew B-24 Liberators. Seeing action in Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean, he was co-pilot of Earthquake McGoon on the Ploesti raid. Despite suffering heavy damage, he and his pilot managed to get the aircraft and crew safely home.

Butler, J Richard

Captain J Richard Butler
'Dick' Butler joined the service in January 1942 and was posted to the 44th Bomb Group, with whom he flew B-24s throughout the war. His first combat mission was in April 1943 and he saw action in Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean. On the Ploesti Raid, Dick was co-pilot of 'Earthquake McGoon'. Badly damaged and flying at tree-top height it was only the skill of Dick and pilot Walter Burke that kept 'Earthquake' in the air and brought the crew home.

American fighter Ace Robert S Johnson is depicted in his 56th Fighter Group P-47 Thunderbolt with codes HV-P named 'Lucky'. Of his 27 victories during a tour of 89 combat missions from April 1943 to May 1944, he scored 21 in this aircraft. The joint sixth top-scoring American Ace of WW2, he was notably the first US pilot in the European theater to better the historic WW1 victory total of Eddie Rickenbacker, the top-scoring American Ace of that war. Post-war, he became a test-pilot and retired in 1962. He died in 1998.

Tribute to Robert S Johnson by Ivan Berryman. 		When the RAF took delivery of their first Consolidated B.24 Liberators in 1941, aerial cover for trans-Atlantic convoys was strengthened, affording these brave merchant ships a modicum of protection as they forged their slow passage from the US to Britain with vital supplies. 120 Sqn was immediately pressed into this role from their initial base at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, before moving to Ballykelly and Reykjavik in Iceland as the U-Boat threat increased. The example shown is a Liberator V of RAF Coastal Command.

The Long Patrol by Ivan Berryman. 		Part of a small print series of six American WW2 aircraft, signed by some of the great American pilots, some no longer with us. Cranston Fine Arts have purchased the last remaining stocks of this aviation series.

B-24 Liberator by Nicolas Trudgian. 		The first successful daylight raid on Berlin. Nicolas Trudgians painting relives the fearsome aerial combat on March 6, 1944, as B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 100th B.G. are attacked. Screaming in head-on, Fw190s of II./JG I charge into the bomber stream. With throttles wide open, 56th Fighter Group P-47 Thunderbolts come hurtling down to intercept. B-17 gunners are working overtime, the air is full of cordite, smoke, jagged pieces of flying metal and hot lead. We are in the midst of one of the fiercest aerial battles of the war.
