Badajoz, 6th April 1812 in North West Spain on the River Guadiana. The siege began on the 17th March and was finally captured on 6th April. The British lost more than 4,800 men.

Philip Haythornthwaite<br><br>This volume tackles the bloody and controversial war that devestated Spain and Portugal for six long years between 1808 and 1814. More than a dozen famous battles were fought on an epic scale in this complex war. Instigated by Napoleon Bonapartes attempt to force Portugal to close her ports to British trade in late 1807, the introduction of French troops into Spain to browbeat the Portuguese caused great resentment amongst the Iberian populace. When in 1808 Napoleon usurped the Spanish throne, the seething undercurrent broke out into violence directed against French troops. Napoleon spent the next six years attempting to manage his Spanish Ulcer; by proving a constant drain on French resources, the war would ultimately play a part in Napoleons eventual downfall. Central to the campaigns fought by the Portuguese and Spanish regulars and the vicious guerrilla war against the French was the support of a British Army, whose actions established Wellingtons reputation as the pre-eminent British soldier of his era.
The Peninsular War - The Complete Companion to the Iberian Campaigns 1807-14.		 The Battle of Tudela, fought on November 23rd 1808, saw the French forces under Marshal Jean Lannes decisively defeat the Spanish armies led by General Castanos and General Palafox. Spanish casualties were significant, with around 6,000 killed or wounded. While French losses were relatively minimal, with only about 700 casualties. The aftermath of the battle forced the Spanish armies to retreat in two directions, with one contingent moving towards Zaragoza and the other towards Madrid. This victory allowed Napoleon to advance rapidly, culminating in the French capture of Madrid in early December 1808.
