Spearheading the Falklands Task Force as it heads south in 1982, the carrier HMS Hermes is shown in company with two Type 21 frigates, HMS Arrow on the left and HMS Ardent in the near foreground. In the far distance, HMS Glamorgan glints in the sun as Type 42 HMS Sheffield cuts across behind Hermes. All pennant numbers were painted out and a vertical black identification stripe applied to all the Type 42s to distinguish them from their Argentine counterparts.

It is ironic that, just as the RAF were beginning to retire or re-assign their ageing force of V-bombers, the situation in the Falkland Islands called for a long-distance bombing mission to disable the runway at Port Stanley which now threatened to become an operational fighter base for the Argentine Air Force. Flying a round trip of some 8,000 miles, it was necessary for Avro Vulcan XM607 to refuel several times from a fleet of Victor tankers who themselves had to be refueled in an extraordinary relay operation, a remarkable example of planning, navigation and airmanship. Under the code name 'Black Buck', seven such missions were carried out, using bombs and missiles fired from hastily fitted pylons beneath the Vulcan's wings. Here, a Vulcan edges slowly toward the drogue to receive fuel from a Victor K.Mk2.

Looking slightly the worse for wear after her journey south to the Falkland Islands in 1982, the P&O cruise liner <i>Canberra</i>, requisitioned as a troop carrier at the outbreak of the conflict, is shown in the midst of an attack by Argentine Mirage aircraft in San Carlos Water during May. Believed by the Argentine pilots to be a hospital ship, <i>Canberra</i> herself was never targeted, but her proximity to other ships of the British task force meant that she was constantly in danger.

Black Buck One by Keith Woodcock.		 The P & O cruise liner Canberra lies in San Carlos Water, Falkland Islands, in May 1982, looking very weather-beaten after her punishing journey south during the conflict with Argentina, whilst HMS Argonaut keeps a watching vigil by her side. Both Argonaut and Canberra repeatedly came under air attack in San Carlos Water during the disembarkation of 42 Commando, both surviving the encounters, unlike the unfortunate HMS Ardent which was hit and sunk.
