The Magnificent Fight by John D Shaw. - Cranston Military Prints

The Magnificent Fight by John D Shaw.

The Magnificent Fight by John D Shaw.

The valor shown by those who defended Wake Island against impossible odds from the day of the first Japanese attack on December 8th 1941 through December 23rd 1941, has never been surpassed. Though generally known as the battle which brought the US Marine Corps worldwide admiration in World War Two, men of the US Navy, Army and certain civilians also fought with distinction. Though suffering great hardship as Prisoners of War, the spirit of this group was never broken, and remains steadfast to this day amongst those who live to tell first hand the story of a truly Magnificent Fight.

On 7 August 1942, just eight months after the dramatic events at Pearl Harbor, the United States First Marine Division stormed ashore on the island of Guadalcanal. It was the opening gambit of the land war in the Pacific. The painting depicts Captain Joe Foss as he leads the F4F Wildcats of VMF-121 back to Henderson Field after a day of desperate fighting against the Japanese in the skies over the steaming jungles of Guadalcanal in November 1942 - it would be another three months before the island was finally secured during which time Joe Foss would achieve an astonishing 26 victories to become the first American pilot to equal WW1 Ace Eddie Rickenbackers score.

Holding the Tide by Richard Taylor.
On 20th October 1943, Wildcat and Avenger aircraft from the Carrier US Core, on patrol north of the Azores, surprised U378, a type VIIC U-boat which had been active in that area. The element of surprise was so complete that the submarines guns remained unmanned throughout the action.

The Element of Surprise by Robert Barbour.

Arguably the most important piston-engined single-seat fighter design ever to see service with the US Navy and Marine Corps, the aesthetically inelegant F4F Wildcat achieved much acclaim during its bloody frontline career. Thrown into combat at Coral Sea, Midway and Guadalcanal, the handful of Wildcat units of the Navy and Marine Corps took on large numbers of fighters and bombers and came out victorious. On the European front, the Royal Navys Fleet Air Arm also put the fighter to effective use from escort carriers, protecting Atlantic convoys from Luftwaffe attacks.

David was the fifth of six children. His family moved to Bluffton, Ohio, where he graduated from high school in 1935. He then attended Wheaton College, where he graduated in 1939 with a degree in physics. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in order to learn how to fly and to support his close brother Paul's medical education. As a Marine fighter pilot, he was stationed on Wake Island in the Pacific, where he was captured by the Japanese two weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack. He then spent four years as a POW in Japan. He was awarded the Silver Star for his service. His war experience had a great impact on him leading to a strong belief in peace, nonviolence and service to others. After applying to Harvard Medical School from POW camp, he was accepted for his medical training. He graduated in 1951 cum laude and finished his internship, residency and chief residency at New York Hospital of Cornell University in 1956. While there, he met and married Jean Dulin, a nurse at New York Hospital. They were married in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1952. David Kliewer passed away on 21st March 2007.
