Typical of great air battles fought in the skies above occupied Europe were the determined interceptions by Luftwaffe fighters, particularly upon the massed daylight raids mounted by the American Eighth Air Force. Major Herman Graf, Gruppenkommandeur of JG50, and Oberleutnant Alfred Grislawski, Staffelkapitan of 1./JG50, flying Me109G-6s lead an attack on B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 91st Bomb Group, high over Germany in early September 1943.

South of Alexandria, Egypt, 7th August 1942. When a pair of Me109Fs from JG27 unexpectedly encountered a lumbering Bristol Bombay and downed it, they were unaware of the full significance of their action. It was only on their return to base that Emil Clade and Bernd Schneider heard that Lt. General <i>Strafer</i> Gott the formidable new commander of the 8th Army had perished on the fallen transport. His death opened the way for his replacement, General Montgomery.

Hand of Fate by David Pentland.		 Walter Schuck and fellow pilot of JG5 Eismeer in front of a Me109F covered in tarpaulins as some protection against the weather in this most isolated and inhospitable theatre of the war. Schuck served with this unit from December 1942 to April 1945, and in that time claimed 198 victories.

The Frozen North, Petsamo, Finland, January 1943 by David Pentland. 		Scoring his first victories on the Eastern Front with JG53, Franz Schieß was posted with his squadron to the Mediterranean from December 1941. He shot down aircraft consistently through 1942, operating from Sicily then Tunisia. He achieved his 50th victory in May 1943, claiming one of his eventual unsurpassed tally of 17 P-38 Lightnings. Awarded the Knight's Cross in June 1943, he was sent on leave for two months but returned in August, claiming 12 victories in 11 days. On 2nd September 1943, he was killed when his Me109 crashed into the sea during combat with P-38 Lightnings. He was credited with 67 victories in more than 650 missions.

Tribute to Franz Schieß by Ivan Berryman. 		Magdeburg, Germany, 10th April 1945. Attacking from behind and above, ObLt.Walter Schuck, Staffelkapitain of 3./JG7, ripped through the massed boxes of 8th Airforce B17s, downing four in a single high speed pass.
