Flew with No.32 Sqn before joining No.501 Sqn flying Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain. Later in the war he flew with No.601 Sqn and No.131 Sqn. He died in 2016.

With the RAFVR just before the war commenced, Tony Pickering joined 32 Squadron at Biggin Hill in July 1940, flying Hurricanes, and in August 1940 to 501 Squadron at Gravesend. In September he was shot down in Hurricane P5200, but unhurt in a duel with an Me109, destroying another 109 a few weeks later. In December he joined 601 Squadron at Northolt. After a spell instructing, he joined 131 as a Flight Commander in February 1943, and later served as a Squadron Commander in the Middle East. T

The Italian Air Force's involvement in the Battle of Britain is one of the less documented facets of the conflict of 1940, but raids by aircraft of the Corpo Aereo Italiano (CAI) on mainland Britain were a reality in the closing stages, usually with little effect and almost always with high losses on the Italian side, due largely to obsolete aircraft and lack of pilot training. Based at Ursel in Belgium, Fiat BR.20 bombers flew over 100 sorties, usually escorted by Fiat CR.42s, as illustrated here, the nearest aircraft being that of 18° <i>Gruppo's</i> Commanding Officer Maggiore Ferruccio Vosilla, wearing the white fuselage band and command pennant on the fuselage side.

Italian Raiders by Ivan Berryman. 		Joined the RAFVR in April 1939 and was called up on the outbreak of war. He flew Blenheims during the Battle of Britain with No.29 Sqn from July 1940, and joined No.89 Sqn flying Beaufighters a year later. In autumn 1942 he was no longer allowed to fly due to medical reasons and took on a number of ground roles until leaving the RAF in 1946. He died in January 2000. <br><br><b>Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures.</b><br>
