Lieutenant Reginald Warneford by Ivan Berryman.

Having successfully weaved and dodged the hail of bullets from the defensive guns of the German Zeppelin, Lieutenant Warneford climbed above the giant airship and prepared for a run along the full length of the LZ.37 in the hope that his 20lb bombs would turn it into an inferno and bring it down. Warneford had time to release all six of his bombs, the last of which set off a chain of eruptions that resulted in the Zeppelin breaking its back before plunging to earth in a fireball. So violent was the initial explosion that Warnefords tiny Morane Saulnier Type L was flipped over and thrust 200ft into the air above the disintegrating leviathan. Warneford survived this historic interception, whilst the LZ.37 plunged to the ground near Ghent and was completely destroyed. This was the first time that a Zeppelin had been brought down by an aircraft for which gallant action, Warneford was awarded the Victoria Cross. Special mention should be made of the roundels on the Type L, where the original French examples were not overpainted to British colours on the wings, unlike those on the fuselage sides.

Lieutenant Reginald Warneford by Ivan Berryman. 		A German officer born in 1889, he was a balloon aviation and aerial photographer during the First World War. A rough translation of text from an old publication (1971) is given below : <br><i>Gen Lt Friedrich Stahl, born 14th June 1889. Enlisted as a balloon pilot on 6th January 1912, as a reconnaissance pilot and observer, and instructingin aerial photography. On 1st October 1913 he became Adjutant of the new Airship battalion No.5 until the summer of 1914. From the autumn of 1915 untilsummer 1917, he was second pilot of Schutte-Lanz airships SLII and SLV in the air force. By the end of World War One, he was in command of an airship squadron in the west. In total he piloted or photographed from 23 airships : 3 Parseval, 3 military Groß-Basenach, 13 Zeppelins, 3 Schutte-Lanz and 1 Blimp.</i><br>He later commanded infantry units in World War Two and was questioned as a witness in the Nuremberg trials. He died on 19th December 1979.

Lieutenant Reginald Warneford by Ivan Berryman. 		Lieutenant Leefe-Robinsons BE2C, converted to single-seater night-fighter configuration, destroying the German SL11 over Hertfordshire on the night of 2/3 September, 1916. Robinson attacked the SL11 from below, raking it with incendiary fire, before turning and diving past the airship for another attack. As he did so, the airship exploded into flames and crashed into a field near Cuffley, killing all sixteen crew. For this action, Leefe-Robinson was awarded the VC.
