Grenadiers, 1829 by Mark Churms. 		Owing largely to the dauntless courage and inspiring example of Captain (Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel) Adrian Carton De Wiart, D.S.O., of the Grenadier Guards, a serious reverse was averted during severe and prolonged operations. He displayed the utmost energy and courage in facing the British attack home. After three other battalion commanders had become casualties, he controlled their commands, and ensured that the ground won was maintained at all costs. He frequently exposed himself in the organisation of positions and of supplies, passing unflinchingly through a most intense fire barrage. He was awarded the V.C. for most conspicuous bravery, coolness and determination.

The Roll Call by Lady Elizabeth Butler. 		When in command of an isolated trench and attacked on front, flank and rear, Captain Eugene Napoleon Ernest Mallet Vaughan (Reserve of Officers) Grenadier Guards, drove off the enemy, killing over 100 of them, and took twenty prisoners. His fine example gave great confidence to his men, and he was subsequently awarded the D.S.O. for his conspicuous gallantry.
